
CHS wrestlers competed at the Region II Tournament held at Arlington Martin and after two days of action, the boys earned 3rd place and girls placed 2nd overall in the team standings. "We had 9 boys and 8 girls qualify for the Regional tournament and a total of 6 wrestlers placed well enough to qualify for the State Tournament coming up Feb 24-25 in Austin," said Head Coach Chip Lowery. Only the top 4 wrestlers from each division get to advance to State. From the boys team, Sam Rice continues his winning streak with a record of 38-0 earning the title of Region Champion. Also, qualifying are Kaleb Richardson and Daniel Murillo both returning to State again this year after placing 2nd at Region this week. From the girls squad, Avery Souders (2nd) and Sam Tudor (3rd) also qualifed along with Stephanie Martinez earning an alternate position. "Qualifying for the State Tournament is a huge accomplishment in itself, meaning you are one of the top 16 wrestlers in the entire state."
Congratulations to the Coaches and Atheletes on another District Team Championship Title. Both the Boys and Girls teams put together some unbeleivable wrestling to win the overall District 12 Title. Boys winning individual championship honors include Roberto Montealegre (#120), Kaleb Richardson (#126), Daniel Murrillo (#132), Dillon Stoffregen (#195), Will Braem (#220), and Same Rice (#285). Other boys qualifying to advance to Regions by earning 2nd place include Prestin Cullison (#113), Robert Dow (#152), and Gerry Meddaugh (#160). On the girls squad, individual District Champions include Sam Tudor ((#119), Avery Souders (#138), Stephanie Martinez (148), Heli Dave (#160) and Maria Boccalandro (#215). Other girls qualifying for Regions include 2nd place finishers Anna Woo (#95), Breanna West (#110), and Cara Romieke (#128). Total of 9 boys and 8 girl wrestlers will head to Arlington Martin Feb 10-11 to compete in the Region 2 Tournament.
Coppell wrestlers finish the regular tournament season by winning two seperate Dual Meet tournaments before heading to the District Tournament, Friday, Feb 3, at South Grand Prairie HS. On Tuesday, CHS hosted the traditional "Senior Night" tournament against Frisco Liberty. The event started with exhibition matches from the Coppell Youth Wrestling program followed by JV, Girls, and Varsity team matches. Each of the 3 teams won their team competition. Senior wrestlers and their parents where recognized and honored during their last home tournament of the season. On thursday, all 3 squads competed against Lewisville, each team winning in dominating fashion. "Our kids made a big improvement from last week and are really coming together nicely before District next Friday," Said head coach Chip Lowery. The varsity ends the regular Dual Meet season with a 15-2 record
Cowboy varsity wrestlers competed in the Ranger Classic Invitational held at Jesuit, Dallas. "This was the toughest competition we had so far this year" said head coach Lowery. Some of the top ranked teams from throughout the state competed with each division having numberous State ranked wrestlers. After two days of wrestling, the Cowboys finish 6th in the overall team division with Kaleb Richardson and Sam Rice earning individual championship honors. Rice finishes the regular tournament season undefeated as they head into District, Feb 3. Meanwhile the Varsity B team competed in Frisco and the girls were at Centennial's Lone Star Classic with Avery Souders earning 2nd place honors.
Varsity Cowboy Wrestlers competed in the Texas Christian Academy Invitational, Jan 14 and win the Team Championship in convincing fashion. "We really wrestled well as a team, with most of our wrestlers making it to the finals," said Head Coach Chip Lowery. Earning 1st place in their divisions were Daniel Murillo, Will Braem, and Sam Rice. Other Cowboys making it to a podium position include; Kaleb Richardson (2nd), Roberto Montealegre (2nd), Robert Dow (2nd), Gerry Meddaugh (3rd), Dillon Stoffregen (3rd), Preston Cullison (4th), and James Brakovec (4th). "There was a lot of tough competition with several State Ranked wrestlers competing in each division, said Lowery. Meanwhile the Varsity B team competed in the Colony, while the girls earned 3rd place in team competition at Bishop Dunn. From the girls squad, Avery Souders wins her division and Anna Woo, Charlotte Lee, Same Tudor, and Stephanie Martinez each taking 3rd place in their divisions.
Varsity cowboy wrestlers won the team championship at the Craig T. Grace Invitational at the Delco Center Arena in Austin this past weekend. The two-day tournament featured 51 teams representing Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, and Corpus Christi. "This was a big tournament, each bracket had at least 30 wrestlers competing in each division", said head coach Chip Lowery. "I was proud of how well our kids competed with most going deep in the brackets earning valuable team points." Individual podium finishes include Kaleb Richardson (1st), Daniel Murillo (2nd), Roberto Montealegre (2nd), Will Bream (2nd), Dillon Stoffregen (3rd), Gerry Meddaugh (3rd), Leighton Leight (3rd). The girls squad finished with 5th place in the team standings with tournament placers including Avery Souders (1st), Cara Romieke (3rd), and Stephanie Martinez (3rd). This week varsity boys will compete at TCA, JV is heading to the Colony, and the Girls will be at Bishop Dunn. "We look to keep improving as we get closer to the District Tournament, Feb 3," said Lowery.
During the holiday break, several CHS wrestlers spent some time volunteering in the community. Kaleb Richardson and Sam Rice helped spread the holiday spirit by delivering christmas gifts throughout the community as part of the "make a child smile" program. "This is awesome being able to help families and watching the kids faces light up with a big smile," said Rice. Varsity resumes practice this week in preparation for the Centex Tournament in Austin, Jan 6-7.
Another busy week for CHS wrestlers. Things got started with team "Duals" on Friday as the Varsity Boys won their team competition against both Highland Park and Pascal while the Girls squad also won against Skyline, Sam Houston, and Pascal. The traditional "Santa Slam" home tournament was held on Saturday with over 38 schools competing. The Varsity Boys earned 2nd place in the team competition behind Flower Mound. Leading the way earning individual championship honors were Kaleb Richardson, Daniel Murillo, and Sam Rice. Also earning podium places were Roberto Montealegre (2nd), Dillon Stoffregen (3rd), and Jared McComb (3rd). The Girls finished 1st overall in team standings with strong individual finishes from Avery Souders (2nd), Stephanie Martinez (2nd), and Cara Romieke (2nd). "I'm very proud of how well our wrestlers competed this week and look forward to keeping the momentum going," said head Coach Chip Lowery.
The varsity boys team traveled to Rogers, Arkansas for the NWA Duals. A total of 18 Teams representing Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri competed in team duals. After 2 days of wrestling, Coppell finished 3rd overall. CHS senior, Sam Rice led the team once again by winning all his matches and he remains undefeated for the season. "Our kids matched up very well against some out of state competition", said Head Coach Chip Lowery. Meanwhile, the Girls squad competed in the 9th Annual Texas Ladies Classic at Frisco High School. The Cowgirls competed against 25 other schools with both Team Captains earning places on the podium, Avery Souders (2nd) and Sam Tudor (4th). This week (Dec 16-17) CHS will be hosting the annual "Santa Slam Invitational." The home tournament has a holiday theme with wrestling friday afternoon and all day saturday.
CHS wrestlers were busy competing in 3 tournaments this week. Things got started on thursday with the Varsity, JV, and Girls challenging Frisco High in Team Duals. Coppell wrestlers dominated the meet, winning each of the 3 team competitions. On Friday, CHS Varsity and JV teams traveled to Lake Highlands High School for the 25th Annual Tri-State Invitational. Over 25 schools representing 3 states competed for 2 days. "This tournament always attracts tough competitors from Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana" said head coach Chip Lowery. The varsity boys squad was led by Kaleb Richardson and Sam Rice each going undefeated and being crowned individual champions with Richardson being awarded the prestigous "Most Outstanding Wrestler" award for the tournament. Other varsity placers include Will Braem and Daniel Murillo each taking 3rd overall. The varsity team earned a respectable 3rd place in the final team standings. JV boys winning individual brackets include Roger Moe, Yeshua Ramirez, and Geoffrey Yut. Meanwhile, the girls team hosted the annual "Cowgirl Classic" taking 3rd place against 18 other teams. Individual girl placers include Stephanie Martinez (2nd), Sam Tudor (2nd), Avery Souders (3rd), and Anna Woo (3rd).
CHS hosted the "Coppell Roundup" season opener wrestling tournament on Sat, Nov 19. Wrestling teams from Coppell, Fossil Ridge, Lewisville, Frisco Heritage, Justin Northwest and Azle competed in team competition. After 5 rounds, all three Coppell squads dominated the competition and were awarded tournament champions. Leading the charge for the Varsity Boys were Captain Kaleb Richardson, Captain Sam Rice, Roberto Montealegre, and Daniel Murillo each going undefeated throughout the tournament. From the girls team, Avery Souders and Stephanie Martinez were also unbeaten. According to head coach Chip Lowery, "this is a great way to start the season and we look to keep momentum going."

Coppell wrestlers traveled to Estes Park, Colorado for Dual Team Competition June 21-24. After 3 days of competition, Coppell placed 3rd overall out of 16 teams. The team was led by Kaleb Richardson, going undefeated (11-0) throughout the tournament. According to Coach Lowery, "the team performed well against teams from all over the U.S." The trip also included team building activities such as visiting the "Red Rock" theatre, hiking to the Continental Divide, swimming, and hiking the legendary "Incline" in Colorado Springs. CHS hosted the All American Summer Wrestling Camp, June 14-17. Over 70 athletes participated in 4 days of intense training with clinician Jarod Fryer, Division 1 collegiate head coach and national champion. According to Head Coach Chip Lowery, "Coach Fryer is an outstanding wrestler and instructor, we are very fortunate to have him working with our kids." Wrestlers endured 2 hour sessions, 3 times a day, covering everything from basic technique up to collegiate level training.
CHS wrestlers volunteered at "Coppell Earthfest" held Saturday, April 30. The event is held each year to promote a clean and healthy environment. The event featured booths on different types of energy sources, ideas and services to help protect the environment, plus there was electronic recycling, free document shreding, and collection of bulky trash items along with various entertainment. Wrestlers volunteered to help with unloading of vehicles delivering items for recycle and bulk trash items. According to Coach Lowery, "this was a great opportunity for our wrestlers to give back to the community."
CHS wrestlers enjoyed team "Fun Day" at the Main Event, Sunday, April 17. Over 50 wrestlers spent the afternoon playing video games, laser tag, bowling, and just having fun. According to Coach Chip Lowery, "this was a great opportunity for all the kids to relax and have some fun after a long competition season." "It's also nice to see everyone developing friendships and team building," said Lowery. Special thanks to the Coppell Wrestling Booster Club for sponsoring the activity.
A team of CHS wrestlers competed in the "Pros vs Joes" push up charity event held Saturday, April 9. Each team consisted of 5 members, performing push-ups for 90 seconds each for a total team score. The CHS team scored a total of 404 push-ups, earning a respectable 3rd place behind Coppell Police (1st) and Coppell Firefighters (2nd). With over 100 participants, the event raised over $10,000 for the "Wounded Warriors" organization, benefiting soldiers and their families. The CHS team included; Matt Robinson, Mark McPherson, Brian Mares, Kaleb Richardson, and Coach John Robinson. Congratulations!
The annual CHS Wrestling Awards Banquet was held Thursday, April 7, at the newly constructed Coppell Community Center. The event continues to grow each year with over 175 attending the celebration. Things started with a slide show presentation highlighting the 2010-11 season. Sr Matt Robinson conducted the invocation then everyone enjoyed a "buffet style" BBQ meal. Head Coach Chip Lowery presented awards to all the athletes and thanked everyone for another successful season. Booster Club President, Kevin Richardson recognized the Board of Directors, Booster Club Officers, and Committee Heads. Special thanks to the Banquet Committee Chairs Melody Lister and Karla Richardson for coordinating the banquet. It truly was a memorable event for all.

CHS sent 8 wrestlers to the State Tournament in Austin, Feb 25-26. State Qualifiers from the girls squad include: Kaci Fullinwider, Tara Brandt, Nkem Ukoha, and Lorena Ramirez. From the boys team: Matt Robinson, Mark McPherson, Kaleb Richardson, and Daniel Murillo. "This is a huge accomplishment to make it to the tournament" said head coach Chip Lowery . Only the top 16 wrestlers in each division get the opportunity to compete at the State Tournament. After 2 days of full competition, Senior Captain, Matt Robinson placed 6th in the 160 lb division. Overall, the Boys Team finished 4th and the Girls were awarded 2nd place in team standings.
CHS hosted the Region 2, District 12 wrestling tournament on Monday, Feb 7 after being rescheduled from the original date Feb 4, due to adverse winter weather conditions. Coppell Boys Varsity and Girls teams took 2nd place overall in the team competition behind rival South Grand Prairie. Coppell Boys earning individual District Championship titles include Roberto Montealegre, Kaleb Richardson, Matt Robinson, and Sam Rice. From the Girls squad, Kaci Fullinwider, Tara Brandt, and Nkem Ukoha each won District Titles for individual divisions. Only the 1st and 2nd place positions from each division advance to the Regions. Overall, 12 Boys and 6 Girls from Coppell qualified for the Regional Tournament scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Feb 11-12, held at Arlington Martin High School.
Coppell Wrestlers celebrated "Senior Night," Thursday, Jan 27 at the CHS gym. Events started with exhibition matches from the youth wrestling program, followed by select JV Boys and Girls matches then a full varsity dual against Frisco Liberty. The team ended the regular season by defeating Liberty 53-15 and ending the regular season going undefeated in dual meet competition. "Senior Night is a CHS tradition where we introduce athlete's and their parents and then recognize each for their commitment and dedication," said Coach Chip Lowery. CHS will host the District 12 Tournament, Friday, Feb 4, beginning at 10am. "Come out and support CHS wrestlers as we defend our District title," said Lowery.
Another busy week for CHS wrestlers as teams competed in numerous tournaments throughout the area. On Thursday, the Varsity Boys competed in a dual meet against Frisco Wakeland, winning 63-12. Then on Friday, the Boys Varsity headed to Dallas Jesuit for two days of intense competition. Over 20 teams competed with some traveling from far away as Austin and San Antonio. The Varsity Boys earned a respectable 3rd place overall with Roberto Montealegre leading the charge winning individual championship honors. Other varsity boys making it to the final match include Kaleb Richardson, Daniel Murillo, Mark McPherson, and Matt Robinson. The Varsity B team attended the Frisco Heritage Coyote Classic on Saturday. Varsity B wrestlers who placed at the tournament include Cam Morgenson 3rd, Miguel Herrara 4th, Michael Olsen 4th, and Michael Crow 4th. Boys JV wrestlers won their tournament held at Frisco Centennial with Ben Herringer and Andrew Vasquez being crowned individual bracket champions. Meanwhile the girls squad competed at Frisco Centennial with Kaci Fullinwider and Tara Brandt placing in their individual brackets. On Thursday evening, Jan 27, CHS will host "Senior Night." According to Coach Lowery, "we will have a dual meet against Frisco Liberty and recognize our seniors and parents for all their hard work and dedication." CHS will host the District Tournament scheduled for Friday, Feb 4.

Girl wrestlers attended the Somerstein Invitational held at Bishop Dunne campus and took the overall team championship. Kaci Fullinwider and Lorena Ramirez led the way going undefeated and earning individual championship honors. The boys varsity team took a respectable second place at the TCA Invitational held in Addison with Mark McPherson, Matt Robinson, and Sam Rice each being crowned individual champions. Boys JV also competed at the TCA tournament and won the overall team competition with several wrestlers making it to the final rounds. Meanwhile the boys varsity B team competed in the Colony, placing 6th in the team standings with Daniel Murillo earning individual champion honors. "Our wrestling is really starting to come together, we look to continue our final push with district only a few weeks away," said Coach Chip Lowery.
Coppell HS varsity boy and girl wrestlers headed to Austin Jan 7-8 to compete in the Centex Invitational Tournament held at the AC Delco Athletic Center . Over 40 teams from Texas competed and after two days of intense competitions, both the boys and girls team were crowned team champions. Leading the way for the boys team earning individual championship honors were Kaleb Richardson, Mark McPherson, and Bryan Mares. From the girls squad, Kaci Fullinwider, Lorenan Ramirez, and Avery Souders were also crowned individual champions. "This was a big tournament with a large number of competitors in every bracket, all our kids did well advancing deep into the brackets earning valuable team points," said head coach Chip Lowery. This weekend, the boys, girls, and JV squads will be competing in several different locations simultaneously. "We look to keep our momentum rolling as we approach the district tournament in 3 weeks," said Lowery.
It was a busy week for CHS Wrestlers as they hosted the annual "Santa Slam" Tournament last week, Dec 16 through 18. The event is held each year the week before Christmas and includes a holiday theme. "Our tournament has a reputation of top competition and fun holiday spirit," said Head Coach Chip Lowery. "We had a full tournament and teams traveling from far away as California." Tournament events began Thursday with the Junior Varsity boys matching up against Arlington Martin. Friday included team duals with the Varsity Boys winning convincingly against Highland Park and Pascall. On Saturday, 30 teams converged on the CHS grounds for the individual varsity and overall team competition. The varsity boys placed a very close second behind Keller Central with only 1.5 points between the two teams. Coppell boys earning individual bracket championship honors include Daniel Murillo 119 lbs, Mark McPherson 125 lbs, Matt Robinson 160 lbs, and Sam Rice 285 lbs. The girls' team earned a respectable 3rd place in the overall team competition with Lorena Ramirez being crowned champion in the 119 lb division. "Our tournament was very successful, thanks to dozens of school officials and volunteers who worked hard to keep our tradition alive, " Lowery said. After the holiday break, Coppell wrestlers will return to competition in Austin on Jan 8.
CHS varsity starters traveled to Florida for team dual competition. Both the Boys and Girls squads earned 3rd place overall after 2 full days of competition. "Our kids had some tough matches but did very well against the Florida teams," said Coach Chip Lowery. From the Boys team, Senior Captain Mark McPherson won top honors going undefeated as did girl team members Lorena Ramirez and Sam Tudor. This Saturday, CHS will host their annual "Santa Slam" tournament with over 30 DFW schools converging at CHS for 2 days of competition.

This years picnic was a huge success! The weather was perfect for a day of fun, food, and camaraderie. Over 100 parents, athletes, and coaches came out to meet one another, socialize, and enjoy the afternoon. We all know how busy things get once the season starts so it was a great time to relax and enjoy the day. Coppell wrestlers traveled to Estes Park, Colorado for Dual Team Competition June 21-24. After 3 days of competition, Coppell placed 4th overall out of 16 teams. The team was led by Mark McPherson and Kaleb Richardson, both going undefeated (11-0) throughout the tournament. According to Coach Lowery, "the team performed well against teams from all over the U.S." The trip also included team building activities such as primitive camping, white water rafting, hiking to the Continental Divide, swimming, and hiking the legendary "Incline" in Colorado Springs. Wrestlers include Matt Robinson, Chase Gibson, Conner Wales, Dillon Stoffregen, Sam Rice, Grady Bernard, Roberto Montealegre, Wesley Adams, Robert Dow, Bryan Mares, Mark McPherson, Mark De La Chapelle, Garrett Geeslin, Kaleb Richardson, and Preston Cullison.
CHS hosted the All American Summer Wrestling Camp, June 14-17. Over 60 athletes participated in 4 days of intense training with clinicians Kyle and Chad Terry, University of Oklahoma All Americans and Big 12 Champions. According to Head Coach Chip Lowery, "Kyle and Chad are both outstanding wrestlers and instructors, we are very fortunate to have them working with our kids." Wrestlers endured 2 hour sessions, 3 times a day, covering everything from basic technique up to collegiate level training.
Eight CHS wrestlers traveled to Missouri June 10-15 for some elite training at the Purler Wrestling Academy located in the Cuivre River State Park facility. The Purler brothers (Nick and Tony) are two of the most successful wrestlers in the USA and have developed a training system that is proven to build champions. The wrestlers endured five days of training with a balance of both wrestling and team building. Each day included three training sessions lasting two hours each with some rest and relaxation in-between. Camp attendees include; Kaleb Richardson, Mark McPherson, Conner Wales, Bryan Mares, Roberto Montealagre, Garrett Geelin, Preston Cullison, and Grady Bernard. According to Coach Lowery, "it's exciting to see our kids have the opportunity to train and learn at one of the best training camps in the country."
Several CHS wrestlers competed in the Texas USAW State Freestyle and Greco Tournament. Over 750 entries were registered at the UTA Athletic Center May 22-23. The Coppell Woman's team had a great showing as they won first place in the team division. Stand out performance by CHS Senior Brittany Jones as she won the gold medal in the 165 lb freestyle division and was crowned State Champion! Additional woman's team members include Lorena Ramirez, Avery Souders, and Kihana West; each placing 2nd in their divisions. For the men's team, Daniel Murillo placed 3rd in Cadet Greco and Mark McPherson earned 2nd in Junior Freestyle. Also participating on the men's team was Ramiro Garza and Harold Park. According to Coach Chip Lowery, "this was one of the biggest turnouts for the freestyle/greco state tournament with lots of tough competition, I am extremely proud of how well our kids competed."
Coppell played host to 445 total entries at the "Spring Slam" freestyle and greco tournament. According to coach Chip Lowery, "this was the second largest turnout in the north region this spring besides Coppell's previous tournament earlier this season." Several CHS wrestlers were crowned champions in both the mens and womens division. On the mens team, Daniel Murillo placed 1st in Cadet Greco. Lorena Ramirez, Avery Souders, Kihana West, and Brittany Jones all earned 1st place honors for the women's team. Other CHS wreslters who placed include; Ramiro Garza 2nd, Mark McPherson 2nd, and Grady Bernard 3rd. Additionaly CHS participants include; Bryan Mares, Chase Gibson, Harold Park, and Chris Ratton. Next weekend the spring season will conclude with the TXUSA State Tournament held at the UTA campus, May 22-23. Wrestlers throughout the state of Texas will compete to qualify for National Competitions held throughout the summer.
CHS wrestlers headed to The Colony for freestyle and greco competition hosted by the Thundercats Wrestling Club. The event had over 300 individual entries with several CHS wrestlers placing in the medal rounds. In the Cadet Division, Daniel Murillo took 1st place in GR and 2nd in FS, Dillon Staffregon placed 1st in GR and 2nd in FS, Ramiro Garza earned 2nd in GR and 2nd in FS. Mark McPherson placed 2nd in the Junior FS Division. In the Woman's Division, Avery Souders placed 1st and Kihana West earning 2nd. Other CHS wrestlers competing in the tournament include Kaleb Richardson, Roberto Montealegre, and Robert Dow. Next week, wrestlers will be heading to Sam Housing HS for the the Tervel Dlagnev Classic Tournament.
Saturday, April 24 was a busy day for CHS wrestlers competing in two seperate tournaments at the same time. The Redhawk Rumble Freestyle event was held at Liberty High School in Frisco. CHS wrestlers who competed in Frisco include Avery Souders (1st) womans 132 lbs, Kihana West (2nd) womans 132 lbs, Dillon Stoffregon (2nd) cadet 189 lbs, and Grady Bernard cadet 160 lbs. Several other CHS wrestlers headed to the Houston area to compete in the "Katy Open." According to Coach Lowery, "our wrestlers matched up very well against the houston kids." CHS placers at the Katy tournament include Kaleb Richardon (1st) cadet 125 lbs, Mark McPherson (1st) junior 130 lbs, and Garrett Geeslin (3rd) cadet 135 lbs. Next week, CHS wrestlers will head to The Colony for Freestyle and Greco competition.
The annual end of season Wrestling Banquet was held on Sunday at the Hard 8 BBQ in old town Coppell. Representatives from the CISD, Coaches, Parents, and Atheletes were in attendance (173 total). The event started with an invocation given by Team Captain, Duncan Dominguez followed by BBQ buffet with all the fixins. Next, it was Booster President, Blair Ward who recognized the spouses of the coaches and presented each with a bouquet of flowers. Blair introduced the coaching staff and thanked them for another successful season. Coach Chip Lowery thanked the Booster Club and all parent volunteers for supporting the program and then he presented recognition awards to all the wrestlers. The banquet was a fun time for all and a great opportunity to recognize the athletes for their accomplishments. Special thanks to the following committee members for organizing such a nice event; Luann Ward, Karla Richardson, Renee Wales, Kit Waychoff, Shawn Rice, Andrea Adams, Jean Ainsworth, Melody Lister, Robbie Monteleagre, and Olga Souders.
The "Gone But Not Forgotten" freestyle tournament was hosted by Frisco High School on Saturday, April 10. Proceeds from the event support the Wounded Warrior Project for military troops and veterans in need of assistance. CHS wrestlers had a strong showing with individual tournament champions awarded to Daniel Murillo (119), Mark McPherson (135), Lorena Ramirez (118), Avery Souders (138), and Brittany Jones (165). Other CHS competitors include Garrett Geeslin (140) and Kaleb Richardson (125, INJ). Next week's Freestyle event will be held in McKinney.
Coppell High School hosted the opening tournament for the spring Greco/Free Style wrestling season on Saturday, April 3. The tournament was one of the largest spring events in comparison to years past. According to Coach Chip Lowery, "there were over 500 participants, with teams traveling from far away as Colorado and Mexico." Tournament Champions in the Cadet Division include Kaleb Richardson (119) and Sam Rice (285), both going undefeated in Greco and Free Style events with Daniel Murillo placing 2nd. The Junior Division placers include Sam Rice taking 1st (285), Kaleb Richardson 2nd (119), Mark McPherson 3rd (135), Bryan Mares 3rd (140), and Conner Wales 3rd (171). Coppell placers in the Women's Division include Champion Lorena Ramirez (111), Kihana West 2nd (138), and Brittany Jones 2nd (165). The spring season will continue for eight weeks leading up to the State Tournament scheduled for May 23-24.
The top high school wrestlers in Texas took to the mat competing in the UIL State Wrestling Tournament at the AC Delco Center in Austin. Six CHS wrestlers placed in the individual division with the boys taking fourth overall in the team competion. From the boy's team, Trevor ward took second in the 189 lb division, Duncan Dominguez placed third at 145 lbs, Teddy Johnson placed third at 215 lbs, Hampton Roese placed fourth at 119 lbs, and Kaleb Richardson placed fourth at 112 lbs. From the girl's team, Brittany Jones placed second in the 165 lb division. "It was a great tournament and we really went out and competed," said Head Coach Chip Lowery. "Everyone did very well. There isn't a single person I can single out. Each wrestler beat either someone they had previously lost to or weren't supposed to beat. Or, they beat a returning regional or state champion. They exceeded all my expectations." Lowery said while the fourth place finish on the boys team wasn't a team record, it was a record for the number of placers the Cowboys had. To have one-third of your team place is pretty impressive.
Behind the strength of 11 competitors who will be heading to the Class 5A State Wrestling Tournament Friday-Saturday in Austin, Coppell's wrestling teams had strong showings in both the boys and girls competitions Feb 15-16 at the Region II Tournament at Arlington Martin. The top four finishers in each weight class qualify for the state tournament. The regional tourney was originally slated to take place Feb. 12-13, but was postponed twice because of weather before finally taking place on Feb. 15-16. The Cowboys totaled 181 points and were just edged out by host Martin, who scored 188 points. The Cowgirls, meanwhile, also took second (92.5) finishing behind Kimball (120). "It was just a great tournament," said Chip Lowery, Coppell coach. "I couldn't be happier, especially considering all of the changes to the schedule and adjustments that took place. The kids did a great job." Lowrey was impressed not only with the team totals, in particular on the girls' side, but with individuals who earned wins over opponents they had previously lost to. Leading the charge for the Cowboys was Trevor Ward, who kept his perfect season going after winning the regional title at 189 pounds. In the finals, Ward was facing a deficit with 3 minutes remaining but rallied from behind to pin Northwest's Chad Wampler. Ward will have his hands full again at state as his weight class features the highest winning percentage at any weight, including three other wrestlers with perfect records this season. The Cowboys other first place finisher was Hampton Roese (119), who won by decision in the finals over Northwest's Greg Barrera, 4-3. Second place finishers were Matt Robinson (140) and Duncan Dominguez (145), who both lost by decision. Rounding out the Cowboys advancing to state are Kaleb Richardson (3rd - 112) and Teddy Johnson (3rd - 215). Mark McPherson, meanwhile, finished fifth (125), as did Sam Rice (285), with Chris Waychoff in sixth (130). On the girls side, each Coppell competitor won at least two matches. Brittany Jones led the way taking second (165), with Nkem Ukoha (215) and Lorena Ramirez (110) placing third, and Monica Baran (128) and Teresa Spangled (148) in sixth.
CHS varsity boys team defended their District Championship by winning the District 12 Wrestling Tournament. "This is the fifth straight year our boys have won district as a team," said head coach Chip Lowery. Additionally, 12 of the 15 varsity starters qualified for the Regional Tournament scheduled for Feb 12-13 at Arlington Martin. Individual boys who were crowned district champions include Kaleb Richardson (112), Hampton Roese (119), Chris Waychoff (130), Matt Robinson (140), Duncan Dominguez (145), Trevor Ward (189), Teddy Johnson (215), and Sam Rice (285). Senior Chris Waychoff also won the tournament "Most Outstanding Wrestler" award. Other varsity boys who qualified for regions by taking 2nd place include Roberto Montealegre (103), Mark McPherson (125), Bryan Mares (135), and Conner Wales (171). CHS girl wrestlers win the team district title with all 8 starters qualifying for the regional tournament. Individual girls who were crowned district champions include Brittany Jones, Lorena Ramirez, and Monica Baran. Other girls who qualified for regions by taking 2nd place include Tara Brandt, Reese Spangler, Samantha Tudor, Jamyra Jackson. Next up for the qualifiers is the Regional Tournament held at Arlington Martin, February 11 where the top 16 wrestlers in each division will compete.
CHS Wrestlers competed in a Dual meet against Frisco Liberty. The events also celebrated "Senior Night" where all Senior wrestlers were recognized along with their parents. CHS dominated the meet and finished the regular season by winning the competition and going undefeated in Dual Match competition for the year. CHS will be defending their 2009 District Title at South Grand Prairie this Friday, Feb 5.
CHS wrestlers had another busy week of wrestling beginning with Coppell hosting a Dual meet against Frisco Wakeland on Thursday. Varsity boys dominated the meet winning 12 of the 15 match ups. The Girls, Varsity B, and JV teams headed to Frisco for the Centennial Tournament on Friday where they met some very tough competition. Results from the girls meet include Lorena Ramirez (119) finishing 2nd and Brittany Jones (165) taking 3rd place. The Varsity Boys attended the Dallas Jesuit Ranger Classic. "The Jesuit tournament has a reputation for attracting some the top competition in the area, and this year was no exception", said head coach Chip Lowery. "Every weight class had several top contenders and state ranked wrestlers." Junior Captain, Matt Robinson defended his number one seed in the 140 lb bracket by winning his division. The highlight matchup included CHS senior Trevor Ward and his Northwest opponent in the 189 lb final match. Both wrestlers are highly ranked in the state and undefeated this season. The exciting match ended when Ward pinned his opponent late in the 2nd period protecting his individual record of 34-0. Coppell placed 3rd overall for the tournament behind San Antonio Reagan (1st) and Lake Highlands (2nd). The regular season will end this Friday as Coppell hosts Liberty for Senior Night. With post season just a few weeks away, CHS is looking to defend their District Championship at South Grand Prairie, Feb 5.
Coppell wrestlers were busy last week competing in four separate tournaments simultaneously. Girl wrestlers were at Grand Prairie while the boys Varsity B competed in the Colony at the same time JV and Varsity boys were wrestling at the TCA Invitational in Addison . "Although our kids and coaches were spread throughout the DFW area, we maintained our consistency with some strong wrestling," said head coach Chip Lowery. The varsity boys team competed against 14 other schools and won the TCA tournament in dominating fashion with 12 of the 15 starters advancing to the final matches. Strong performances by Kaleb Richardson (112), Jaison Jose (119), Duncan Dominguez (145), and Chase Gibson (180), each finishing in second place. Individual champions include Matt Robinson (140), Trevor Ward (185), and Ted Johnson (215). Ward continues his undefeated season (30-0) and earned the prestigious "Most Outstanding Wrestler" award for the tournament. With only a few weeks remaining before post season, CHS wrestlers are looking to keep their momentum going as they prepare to defend their District Championship Feb 5.
Coppell HS varsity boy and girl wrestlers headed to Austin Jan 8-9 to compete in the Centex Tournament held at the Delco Athletic Center. Over 30 teams from Texas converged for two days of intense competition. The boys varsity earned a respectable 2nd place behind Austin Bowie for the overall team championship. Varsity boys who made it to the final matches include Kaleb Richardson (112 lbs), Hampton Roese (119 lbs), Mark McPherson (125 lbs), Bryan Mares (130 lbs), Matt Robinson (140 lbs), Duncan Dominguez (145 lbs), Trevor Ward (189 lbs), and Ted Johnson (215). Senior Trevor Ward continues to dominate the 189 pound division as he remains undefeated (27-0) for the season. The girls earned 3rd place overall in the team competition with Lorena Ramirez winning the 110 lb individual bracket. Other girls in the final matches include Avery Souders (128 lbs), Kihana West (138 lbs), and Brittany Jones (165 lbs). "This was a great opportunity to match up against some new competition before the district tournament in 3 weeks," said head coach Chip Lowery. Wrestlers will compete this weekend at the TCA invitational held in Dallas.
Another busy week for Coppell Wrestlers as they hosted the annual Santa Slam tournament on Dec 17-19. The event is held the week before Christmas each year and includes a holiday theme. "Our tournament has a reputation of top competition and fun holiday spirit," said head coach Chip Lowery. "We had a full tournament and had teams travel from far away as Austin and San Antonio." Tournament events started on Thursday with the JV team competing against Flower Mound. Friday included Varsity Team Duals with CHS winning convincingly over Highland Park and Creekview. On Saturday, 27 teams converged on the CHS grounds for the individual varsity and overall team competition. CHS boy's varsity team placed a very close 2nd behind Centennial with only 7.5 points between the two teams. Senior Trevor Ward (189 lbs) and Junior Captain Matt Robinson (140 lbs) continue their undefeated season record winning their individual divisions. The girl's team earned a respectable 5th place in a very competitive event. "Our tournament was very successful thanks to dozens of school officials and volunteers who worked hard to keep our tradition alive," Lowery said. Wrestlers will enjoy a much needed holiday break before returning to competition in Austin, Jan 8.
Coppell varsity wrestlers traveled to Orlando Florida to compete in a team competition tournament. The boy's team matched up against & Florida teams before being crowned tournament champions. Individual stand out performers leading the team by going undefeated the entire tournament include Sam Rice (285#), Joey Munnia (215#), Trevor Ward (189#), Duncan Dominguez (145#), Matt Robinson (140#), Hampton Roese (119#), and Daniel Murillo (112#). Senior Trevor Ward also earned top honors as the "Outstanding Wrestler" for pinning all 7 of his opponents including the defending Florida State Champion. The girl's team also performed well as Brittany Jones and Kaci Fullinwider both went undefeated. Head Coach Chip Lowery said "our kids have really come together as a team." Coppell will host the annual "Santa Slam" tournament in Coppell this week, Dec 18-19. The event will include several top ranked teams from the area.

Second place individual results from Brittany Jones and Kihana West helped the girls team place 4th overall. The Boys participated in the "Tri-State Classic" hosted by Lake Highlands High School with over 30 teams from Texas , Oklahoma , and Louisiana competing for two days. Senior Trevor Ward led the varsity team winning his individual bracket as the team placed 3rd overall. Head Coach Chip Lowery is pleased with the team's performance as several of the starters are dealing with injuries. "We have a very young team that is maturing quickly," Lowery said. The JV boys team included 45 wrestlers led by individual bracket Champions Harold Park and Daniel Murillo. Coppell teams will be traveling this week then hosting their annual "Santa Slam" tournament Dec 18-19.
